Another Emmaus moment...

"The news of the death of Bishop E. Wamukhoya has been another “Emmaus moment” for us. Like the two disciples walking to Emmaus telling the Risen Jesus: “Our own hope had been that...” (Luke 24: 21), we too had hoped she would get better. From the social media I had picked up the news of her being COVID19 positive and kept her in my prayers.

Together we both served as members of the Council of Elders of the “Council of Swaziland Churches” (CSC). At the last AGM celebrated on 19 November 2020 we both welcomed the Deputy Prime Minister to the AGM as representatives of the two of the three founding members of the Council.

Among other things we will remember her for, is her last intervention at the AGM where she pointed out the lack of a specific initiative regarding the care for creation in way forward of the CSC. This, I believe, is something she passionately treasured in her heart calling also for the “Season of Creation” to be celebrated every year between September and October.

A few years' ago I invited her to address us at a round table on “Gender Based Violence” organised by the Catholic Church. She found herself having been double booked and we got a last minute message letting us know that she would not make it. To my surprise she arrived during the meeting and passionately addressed us on the topic for what – I told her – I was deeply grateful.

May she be welcomed home and may the God of all consolation (2 Cor 1:3) give His Peace to his family, the members of the Anglican Church, the Council of Churches and all who will dearly miss her.

Eternal rest grant her O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon her."
