At the end of our solidarity visit to the bishop of Pemba and the people of Cabo Delgado (Mozambique, 2 - 4 December 2020) a press conference was held at the Diocesan offices.
The archbishop of Nampula - Inácio Saure IMC - used the example of the times when we get sick to share his main concern.
When we get sick - he said - we go to a doctor who might initially give us painkillers and immediately ask us to do some tests so that we would know the exact cause of our pain. Once that is clear, treatment would begin.
In this moment, we are giving painkillers to the people. What we do need to know is the cause of this war, why the people have to suffer so much, who is behind it.
Nothing is at this moment more important than putting an end to this war.
As Bishop Luiz Fernando Lisboa (the bishop of Pemba) shared with us: "Even if the war would stop today, it will take a long long time to be able to rebuild the lives of these people. Each day that passes, it becomes more and more difficult".
