The Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference has donated R75,000 for the aid of desperate miners in the Rustenburg’s Lonmin and other platinum mines.  The money was handed over to the diocese of Rustenburg which has been quietly assisting the vulnerable of the situation.  The diocese of Rustenburg runs a big hospice (Tapologo), OVC care centres, food/soup kitchens, clinics as well as ARV rollout centres.

Bishop Kevin Dowling CSsR of Rustenburg said that many miners were coming to their 8 ARV centres for medication as going to mine’s clinics is dangerous.  “Three weeks ago, the OVC centre I operate in the Freedom Park shack settlement next to the Impala mines was broken into by miners and all the food was stolen” said Bishop Kevin.  So, the work done by the diocese of Rustenburg for the poor and vulnerable is being hindered by the violence caused by the strike.

Bishop Kevin thanked the Conference saying; “I am deeply grateful for this wonderful donation and I will inform my management team tomorrow as to how best we can get the humanitarian aid, and especially food, to the most vulnerable children and people.”
